OSX-REIMS 0.6.0 · alpha · Ubuntu

Create and manage your macOS virtual machines with ease.

OSX-REIMS prepares Ubuntu and takes care of your macOS VMs through terminal menus. The EFI comes integrated, and Reims vGPU gives macOS a virtual GPU with graphics acceleration through Vulkan.

An experimental project, for study and testing, with no warranty and no technical support. It does not replace an Apple computer: performance and stability are nowhere near a Mac’s. To really use macOS, day to day, buy a Mac.

Access: Available to Universo Hackintosh members with an active subscription to the Hackintosh - Avançado and Hackintosh - vGPU OS tiers.

  • More hardware freedom

Designed for GPUs from different vendors, with Vulkan 1.2 or later and compatible drivers on Ubuntu.

  • Start without Hackintosh experience

You don’t need prior knowledge of Hackintosh, EFI, OpenCore, Kexts or ACPI to get started.

Hardware freedom

More hardware freedom for your macOS VMs.

With Hackintosh, choosing a computer has always started with the graphics card: macOS only accelerates GPUs it supports natively, and many current cards are left out. With Reims vGPU, the VM depends less on that list.

How graphics acceleration reaches macOS

  1. 01

    macOS sees a virtual GPU

Reims vGPU presents macOS with a paravirtualized graphics device that the system itself recognizes.

  2. 02

    Ubuntu runs it through Vulkan

Graphics operations run on the host computer through Vulkan, an open graphics interface provided by drivers from several vendors.

  3. 03

Less dependence on the physical GPU

As a result, the VM depends less on native macOS support for the graphics card installed in the computer.

Vulkan ≥ 1.2Designed to work with GPUs from different vendors, with Vulkan 1.2 or later and compatible drivers on Ubuntu.

In the screenshots, About This Mac identifies the graphics as “Apple Paravirtualized Graphics Device”.

GPU families considered by the architecture

  • Intel integrated graphics
  • Intel Arc
  • NVIDIA GeForce/RTX
  • AMD Radeon

These families show the intended reach; they are not certification badges or a list of tested models. Vulkan 1.2 is the technical foundation, not a guarantee that it will work: system, virtualization and driver requirements still apply.

Real screen recordings of OSX-REIMS 0.2.0 and 0.3.0 on Ubuntu. Pick a demo; the video only loads when you choose to play it.

  • Played back at real speed, with no speed-ups.
  • The videos have no audio; the descriptions explain each step.
  • Serial numbers and user names have been hidden.

The recordings show what the project does, not what your computer will do. Performance depends on the machine, the GPU and the drivers, and does not compare to a Mac’s: a VM with a paravirtualized GPU does not deliver the Apple hardware experience.

Project limits

An experimental project. Not a replacement for a Mac.

Before you subscribe, be clear about what OSX-REIMS does not set out to be. These are not legal disclaimers: they are the real limits of what the solution does.

  • It does not replace an Apple computer

A macOS VM accelerated by a virtual GPU is not a Mac. Features that rely on Apple hardware, services and integrations may not work, may work only partly, or may stop working with any update.

  • Performance does not compare to a Mac

Every layer of virtualization has its cost. Even with Vulkan acceleration, graphics, disk and power are far from what a Mac delivers. Do not expect parity: expect a difference.

  • It is not for your main machine

Do not use it for professional work, for data without a backup, or for anything you depend on. This is alpha software: it can fail, corrupt a VM or change behavior between versions.

  • It is for studying, experimenting and testing

That is the purpose: learning how the pieces fit together, trying out configurations and testing behavior in a disposable environment. That is where OSX-REIMS makes sense.

  • There is no technical support

OSX-REIMS is provided without warranty and without support. The #osx-reims-chat channel on Discord is a space for members to help each other, where you can report problems and share logs for analysis, but nothing guarantees a reply, a timeframe or a fix.

Need a stable macOS for daily use?

Buy a Mac. That is the honest recommendation: to work with macOS reliably, with support, warranty and every feature working, the way to go is Apple’s official hardware.

OSX-REIMS does not compete with that and does not intend to. It exists for people who want to study and experiment, not for people who need a production tool.

Integrated EFI

The EFI is already part of the solution.

Prepared to Universo Hackintosh standards, with more than 400 customizations, and integrated into OSX-REIMS so you can start without building an EFI from scratch.

  • Integrated EFI

Every new VM gets its own copy of the EFI, with no manual configuration.

  • Universo Hackintosh standards

The preparation follows the standards adopted by Universo Hackintosh.

  • Its own identity per VM

When a VM is created, OSX-REIMS generates a serial number, MLB, UUID, ROM and MAC address unique to it.

400+

EFI customizations

Adjustments applied to the EFI that you don’t have to make by hand.

You don’t need prior knowledge of Hackintosh, EFI, OpenCore, Kexts or ACPI to get started.

VM management

From setup to maintenance, in the same menu.

OSX-REIMS supports the VM for as long as you use it on your computer. These are the functions available in version 0.6.0.

The interface is a terminal menu, opened from the OSX-REIMS shortcut in the Ubuntu applications menu. Every action is also available as a command.

  1. 01

    Prepare

    A ready environment on Ubuntu.

    • Guided setup: system packages, GPU and KVM access, Rust and a Reims vGPU build.
    • Choice of Reims vGPU version: the tested one, recommended, or the latest one.
    • The administrator password is only requested by the steps that need it.
  2. 02

    Create

A new VM in a few questions.

    • Installer from a Recovery downloaded from Apple or from a local installer image.
    • Choice of macOS version and disk size; the disk only uses space as it fills up.
    • Recovery kept in a cache and reused for later VMs.
    • A unique identity generated for each VM.
    • Import of the QCOW2 disk of a macOS already installed in another VM, with a new identity.
  3. 03

    Run

Every VM keeps its own settings.

    • Memory, processors, screen, display server, OpenCore, GPU, refresh rate, network and sound saved per VM: starting one means reading the summary and pressing a key.
    • Full screen, taking the whole monitor, or a normal window — each VM’s own choice.
    • A window on the session’s Wayland or on X11, for desktops that do not run Wayland.
    • On computers with more than one GPU, the GPU that runs each VM.
    • macOS’s refresh rate: the monitor’s own, automatically, or a fixed one, such as 120 Hz.
    • Network through NAT or a bridge, with the VM getting an address of its own on the computer’s network.
    • Sound in macOS and OpenCore’s boot chime, on by default.
    • VMs inside macOS (Docker, VirtualBox, the Android emulator) on Intel computers.
    • Autostart: one VM can open by itself when the computer is turned on.
    • On the first start, the macOS installer is attached automatically; it can be attached again to resume an interrupted installation.
    • Each VM’s state in the menu: ready to install, installed or running, with uptime.
  4. 04

    Manage

    Control over existing VMs.

    • Shut down, restart, force power off or terminate a VM’s process.
    • Delete one VM or all of them.
    • Backing up a whole VM into a single file, and restoring it over itself or as a new VM.
    • Installing the VM’s OpenCore into the macOS disk’s own EFI, keeping the same identity.
    • A log history of every action, with its result.
  5. 05

    Maintain

    Diagnostics and updates.

    • A computer check that changes nothing, with a hint for each problem and a log to share when asking for help.
    • Cleanup of the downloaded installer cache.
    • Updating OSX-REIMS itself from the package you downloaded, with a notice in the menu when a new version is out.
    • Reims vGPU updates, going back to the previous version if the new one fails to build.
    • Rebuilding Reims vGPU from scratch, for when a system update breaks the build.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is OSX-REIMS?

A solution for creating and managing macOS virtual machines on Ubuntu. It prepares the environment, comes with an integrated EFI and uses Reims vGPU as its virtual GPU foundation, with terminal menus to create, start, shut down, delete and maintain VMs.

Do I need to understand Hackintosh?

No. You don’t need prior knowledge of Hackintosh, EFI, OpenCore, Kexts or ACPI to get started.

Your computer does need to meet the requirements, and you need to follow the installation and Ubuntu setup instructions.

Is the EFI already included?

Yes. The EFI is part of OSX-REIMS, follows Universo Hackintosh standards and has more than 400 customizations. Every VM you create gets its own copy, with a unique identity.

Can I use a macOS VM I already have?

Yes, if its disk is in QCOW2 format, like the disk of an OSX-PROXMOX VM. With the Import VM disk option, OSX-REIMS copies the disk into a new VM with its own boot disk and identity; the original file is not changed.

Since the identity is new, Apple services may ask you to sign in again. Whether it works depends on the macOS installed on the disk.

Do I have to choose memory and processors every time the VM starts?

No. Each VM keeps its own settings: memory, processors, screen (window or full screen), display server, OpenCore, GPU, refresh rate, network and sound. You answer on the first start and, from then on, OSX-REIMS shows the summary and asks only whether to start the VM, change a setting or cancel.

Starting a VM that is always used the same way becomes a single keypress.

Can I run Docker or VirtualBox inside the VM?

Yes, with nested virtualization on for that VM: the processor macOS sees then carries Intel VT-x, so Docker, VirtualBox and the Android emulator have something to run on.

This needs an Intel computer, with nested virtualization enabled in KVM (Ubuntu’s default). On AMD processors, macOS has no way to virtualize.

Does the VM have sound and network?

Yes. Sound is on in every VM: macOS plays through Ubuntu’s sound server, from Ventura to Tahoe, with no driver to install, and VMs created from 0.6.0 on also get OpenCore’s boot chime.

The network is NAT by default: the VM reaches the internet through the computer’s address. With the bridge turned on once in Maintenance, a VM can get an address of its own on the network, reachable from the other computers. The bridge needs a wired network port; Wi-Fi will not do.

Can I back up a VM?

Yes. In Backup & Restore, on the main menu, the whole VM — macOS disk, OpenCore, identity and settings — becomes a single file in /opt/osx-reims/backup. It can be restored over the VM itself or as a new VM, with a new MAC address.

The backup is kept on the same disk as the VMs: it protects you from a mistake or an update gone wrong, not from the disk failing. Copy the files somewhere else to keep them safe.

Can the VM open by itself when I turn the computer on?

Yes. One VM can be set to start with the session, and OSX-REIMS offers to turn on Ubuntu’s automatic login, so that starting the machine ends in macOS.

The VM window opens on the graphical session, so it starts after the login — that is why it is two settings, and automatic login is never turned on without being asked for.

Which operating system does my computer need?

Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS, 64-bit (x86_64), with hardware virtualization enabled and KVM, a GPU and driver with Vulkan support, an internet connection, and space for the environment and the VMs.

Does my GPU need native macOS support?

That is no longer the starting point. Reims vGPU presents a virtual GPU to macOS and runs graphics operations through Vulkan on Ubuntu, which reduces dependence on native macOS support for the physical GPU.

The GPU needs Vulkan 1.2 or later support and a compatible driver on Ubuntu. On NVIDIA cards, use NVIDIA’s full driver: the open nouveau driver (NVK) lacks what Reims vGPU needs to run the VM.

Does Vulkan 1.2 guarantee it works on any GPU?

No. Vulkan 1.2 is the technical foundation, not a guarantee. Whether it works also depends on the driver, the GPU model, virtualization and the rest of the system.

Intel integrated graphics, Intel Arc, NVIDIA GeForce/RTX and AMD Radeon are families considered by the architecture, with no certification of specific models.

Which macOS versions appear in the demos?

The screenshots show macOS Ventura 13.7.8, Sonoma 14.8.9, Sequoia 15.8 and Tahoe 26.6.2 running. One of the Tahoe videos shows the VM being created and the Recovery steps, without the full installation.

When creating VMs, OSX-REIMS offers Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia and Tahoe. Offering a version does not mean guaranteed compatibility.

Who can get access?

Universo Hackintosh members with an active subscription to the Hackintosh - Avançado tier or to the Hackintosh - vGPU OS tier, above it. Membership is handled on the YouTube channel, through the official link.

Where do I download the package?

In the #osx-reims channel on the Universo Hackintosh Discord server: click Gerar meu link de download in the pinned message of the channel, and the bot replies, visible only to you, with a personal download link. The package is not distributed by this site.

The link is valid for a single download, only downloads for your Discord account (the page asks you to sign in) and expires after 10 minutes if unused. Up to 3 downloads can be started every 24 hours. The full rules and the data recorded are in Download terms and privacy, in the site footer.

What do members receive?

The OSX-REIMS .deb installation package for Ubuntu and access to the #osx-reims channel on Discord, where the package is downloaded through the Gerar meu link de download button.

Members also get access to the live streams, with more than 200 hours of technical content demonstrated in practice, full access to the Discord with more than 25 technical and community support rooms, access to the OpenCore BASE EFIs, always kept up to date, and other benefits.

Once I am a member, how do I get into Discord?

Just accept our invitation to join our Discord server (Discord invite (opens in a new tab)).

After joining, remember to connect your Discord profile to the YouTube account you used to become a member of the channel: Discord then recognizes you as a member and assigns the member role automatically, which unlocks access to the rooms.

Can I use it instead of a Mac?

No. OSX-REIMS is an experimental project, for study and testing, and it does not replace an Apple computer. Features that rely on Apple hardware, services and integrations may not work, or may stop working with any update.

If you need macOS for work, day to day, with stability and support, the honest recommendation is to buy a Mac.

Is performance the same as on a Mac?

No. The difference is large and expected. Even with graphics acceleration through Vulkan, a VM with a paravirtualized GPU does not deliver a Mac’s performance: virtualization has a cost in graphics, disk and power.

The result also varies a lot with the computer, the GPU and the drivers. The demos on this page show what the project does, not what your machine will do.

Is OSX-REIMS made by the Reims vGPU team?

No. They are independent projects, by different authors. OSX-REIMS is not affiliated with, sponsored or approved by the Reims vGPU authors, does not belong to that project and takes no part in its development.

Reims vGPU is third-party open-source software: OSX-REIMS downloads it from the original repository and builds it on your computer, under its authors’ license. The name OSX-REIMS indicates that the solution was built to work with that technology, not a connection to the project.

Is the project in alpha?

Yes. OSX-REIMS is at version 0.6.0, in alpha, and is provided without any warranty and without technical support. Reims vGPU also describes itself as alpha. Functions and behavior may change between versions.

Does the membership include technical support?

No. The membership gives access to the package and the Discord channels, but it does not include technical support or any guarantee that it will work.

The #osx-reims-chat channel is a space for members to help each other: you can describe the problem there and share the logs from osx-reims doctor for the community to look at. Help is voluntary, and there is no guarantee of a reply, a timeframe or a fix. Support requests by email are not answered.
